Overview: In this lesson, students who have been learning about secession and the Civil War will watch a Discovery Ed video that highlights the order of secession chronologically. Teachers will use the following reader's statement for the mini-lesson on informational text features:
Good readers understand that information can be organized in a timeline to show chronological order, or the sequence of events, so that they can understand the timeframe in which events happened.
Mini-lesson: Students will be taught how timelines are important text features that allow the reader to see events that occur in the order that they occur. Examples of timelines from previous chapters of study in social studies will be used.
RBT questions about timelines:
List the main features necessary to create a user-friendly, yet detailed, timeline.
Watch the Discovery Education Video Segment under the Skillbuilder Section entitled, "The Confederacy."
Students will reread the section of the text called, "The Road to Civil War."
